Rest home boss abuses pensioners over sign By Emily O’Connell A PROMINENT rest home owner and businessman verbally abused his tenants yesterday after they put up a sign at the complex complaining about noisy trucks. John Tooby, owner of the $80 million Lady Wigram Retirement Village, in Wigram Skies, delivered a tirade at four elderly residents, including a woman, using the F-word frequently and calling them a pack of bloody kids. The incident was recorded by a Star journalist who was at the rest home to photograph tenants about their ongoing issues of noisy trucks on Lodestar Ave. The elderly residents were clearly shaken and tried to reason with Mr Tooby, saying they were his tenants, but his abuse continued. Mr Tooby told the pensioners he was “f*****g pissed off” they had contacted The Star about the campaign to stop the trucks. “Yes, I’m not happy, I’m not putting up with that s**t.” He told them the rest home fence they put the sign up on was his property and it had to be taken down. Mr Tooby has been involved with building projects since the 1970s, and set up Golden Healthcare Group, which operates the Lady Wigram Retirement Village. Mr Tooby and Golden Health Care was nominated as a finalist for the 2016 EY Entrepreneur of the Year awards. NO MATTER which way you look at it, rest home owner John Tooby was totally out of line yesterday (see page 1). As journalists we cover all sorts of confrontations – and at times get abused ourselves in the process. That goes with the territory. But pensioners at the Lady Wigram Retirement Village didn’t deserve the tirade they got from the foul-mouthed Tooby yesterday. Our photographer who had gone there at the invitation of the tenants to photograph the sign about stopping trucks was in his words “shocked”. The photographer has been around the traps for many years, and photographed all sorts of situations. I recall a job I was once on with him once when the subject we wanted to talk to had thoughts about backing over us in his bulldozer. So it takes a bit to rattle the photographer. Maybe Tooby’s anger was because he’s been in the construction game. Guess what you need to build things? Trucks. – Barry Clarke

On October 20, 1948, the ”Pleasure Garden” art controversy began when a Frances Hodgkins painting (created in about 1933) was exhibited

at “The Group” show. A fierce debate on art style was joined by people throughout New Zealand. It raged for three years until the city council accepted the painting as a gift on September 3, 1951.

In Brief SMOKFREE OPTIONS Options for extending the city’s smokefree policy are being investigated, which could include outdoor dining and beaches. City council head of strategic policy Helen Beaumont said initiatives in Auckland and Wellington were being evaluated to see what works. Auckland Council announced yesterday all beaches, al fresco dining areas and urban centres would be smokefree from next month. Currently, city council parks, reserves, gardens, playgrounds, bus shelters, and exits and entrances of city council buildings and facilities are smokefree. Previously known as Christchurch Operatic Society Incorporated, the society staged its first show The Belle of New York in 1938. In nearly 80 years, more than 2,000,000 people have attended productions produced by Showbiz Christchurch. But Wicked is only the beginning of a busy season with a full-scale concert and arguably one of the greatest musicals of all time lined up for next year.

A concert featuring composers Cole Porter and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hits, Broadway Hitmen will open in July featuring a full orchestra, soloists and a large chorus. The year will finish with Les Miserables, a moving story about the survival of the human spirit. The show is set in 19thcentury France, where protagionist Jean Valjean is released from 19 years of

imprisonment and attempts to start a new life. Les Misérables has won more than 100 international awards and seen by more than 65 million people. In Showbiz Christchurch’s 1994 original production the show played for four weeks and put 33,000 people through the then Theatre Royal. BYPASS NEARLY COMPLETE The Western Belfast Bypass is 95 per cent complete, with work set to ramp up over the next few weeks. Traffic will be switched onto the Bypass early next month. A northbound lane will open to traffic first, followed by a southbound lane about a week later. The project team will complete the final parts, such as connecting the bypass to the existing road network and doing surfacing work on the on/off ramps. All lanes should be open in December. ONE OF the largest grossing shows in Broadway history will finally come to the city next year. Showbiz Christchurch will launch its 2018 season with the highly-acclaimed musical Wicked. Not only will it be the society’s first show of an ambitious year, it will be the New Zealand theatre company premiere. Since its 2003 Broadway debut Wicked has surpassed $1 billion in total Broadway revenue joining The Phantom of the Opera and The Lion King as the only Broadway shows to do so. It is Broadway’s second highest-grossing show, behind The Lion King. Wicked is the backstory of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and tells the story of an unlikely friendship between two witches – the popular Glinda and a misunderstood green witch Elphaba. The show comes as Showbiz Christchurch prepares to celebrate its 80th anniversary next year.

CRASH VICTIM DIES A 95-year-old man involved in a two car collision in Belfast on October 6 has died. He was Kevin Charles Englefield. Mr Englefield suffered what were termed minor injuries, but died in hospital last week.

Said Mr Prescott: “I had a verbal apology sort of and we did end by shaking hands and I suppose that means something but it’s best I say nothing. “I’m in a difficult situation now and it’s better I say nothing.” The Star attempted unsuccessfully to talk to Mr Tooby after his tirade. But in a brief interview by phone earlier in the afternoon he said: “If I worried about heavy trucks driving past, I wouldn’t be in business, so I would go and find some real news.” Mr Prescott and other residents at the retirement village have been trying to get authorities to stop trucks using Lodestar Ave since earlier this year. The trucks rattle their units from 4.30am and doors and windows can;t be opened because of the noise, he said. Residents have been to the Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board and the police and Wigram MP Megan Woods about the problem.

Taskforce to sort central city problems By Andrew King THREATS OF violence and intimidation have prompted a a taskforce to tackle the “homeless problem” in the city centre. Central City Business Association manager Paul Lonsdale said “we can’t bury our heads in the sand” when it comes to the issue. He will meet today with City Missioner Matthew Mark, city councillor and Safer Christchurch chairwoman Anne Galloway, and city council staff members Claire Phillips and Ana Macadie to start looking at solutions. Mr Lonsdale will then speak with police about their plan. A police satisfaction survey released yesterday said only 45 per cent of those asked felt very safe/safe in the city centre at night, down from 61 per cent in 2014/15. Six-hundred and thirty three people were surveyed. “It will work with the agencies who have the mandate to resolve these issues, whether it be addiction, mental health, employment or housing so we can address the problem,” Mr Lonsdale said. •Homeless solution, pg 7

Proposal to prevent people sleeping rough A new proposal has been presented to the Ministry of Social Development to help find accommodation for the estimated 200 homeless people in the city. Bridget Rutherford reports

By Bridget Rutherford ABOUT 200 people are “sleeping rough” in Christchurch at any one time. That’s what a street count done by city council staff has found, as part the development of a proposal to help alleviate the city’s homeless problem. The count found 84 per cent slept solely on the street, 75 per cent were Maori men, 57 per cent were aged between 25 and 50, while 38 per cent said leaving prison was the reason they were sleeping rough. The city council, community housing providers, Government social services agencies and organisations working with the homeless, have developed a Housing First proposal to help get more people into warm and safe accommodation. It aims to address homelessness by working on the causes

behind it, and has been presented to the Ministry of Social Development to progress. The idea works on the basis it is easier for people to address issues such as mental health or addiction, once they are housed. So, if it gets the go-ahead, it would prioritise getting people

land and Hamilton. In August, the Government invested $16.5 million in the 2017 budget to expand Housing First into areas of high need. As part of the proposal, Christchurch Methodist Mission, Emerge Aotearoa and Comcare Trust would take the lead, supported by Christchurch City Mission, Te Whare Roimata and Collective for the Homeless. Methodist Mission executive director Jill Hawkey did not want to comment on the proposal as it was still under negotiation with the Ministry. Ministry of Social Development housing deputy chief executive Scott Gallacher said the Ministry was pleased to receive the Christchurch proposal. “We are now working through the detail of that proposal. We are not able to offer any further comment at this time, but expect to be able to do so in the near future.” Collective for the Homeless coordinator Brenda Lowe-Johnson said the Housing First policy would work. “I think it’s the answer for homeless problems down here in

Christchurch.” She said the street count figures were what she expected. “We have to make some desperate measures, because things are really bad out there.” She had travelled to Auckland with Ms Hawkey to look at how its Housing First worked to get ideas for the proposal. Central Ward city councillor Deon Swiggs (left) said he was confident the Ministry would support the initiative. He said homeless people were vulnerable, and needed more assistance. “What you see down the street is just the tip of the iceberg,” he said. “People that fall through the cracks – we need to be able to make sure they are looked after.” A report is expected to go to the city council’s social, community development and housing committee next month, which would look at time frames, what role the city council would play, and further advice. City council funding for the initiative would need to be considered as part of the 2018 long-term plan process.

Since the beginning of this year, China’s economy has maintained sound and steady performance with its economic growth rate ranking high among major economies. The Chinese government has been promoting innovation-driven development, pursuing supply-side structural reform, accelerating the shift in development driving forces, and pushing forward economic upgrading. Led by the five concepts of innovation, coordination, green development, openness and sharing, China aims to complete building a moderately prosperous society in all aspects by 2020. Dalziel in US to share quake lessons By Bridget Rutherford MAYOR LIANNE Dalziel will warn two major United States cities in danger of a mega-quake about the importance of building safety laws. She is visiting Seattle and Portland this week and next, and will speak to their emergency management teams about the dangers of unreinforced masonry buildings. They were responsible for killing 39 people in the February 22, 2011, earthquake. “They have exactly the same issues as we do in New Zealand, built in the same era,” Ms Dalziel said. Seattle and Portland are on the north-west coast of the US, next to the North Pacific Ocean. They both sit on shallow faults and scientists warn the rupture of the Cascadia subduction zone off the coast would cause a magnitude 9 megathrust earthquake. Many say it is overdue. Unreinforced masonry buildings don’t have steel reinforcing. Seattle has more than 1100, while Portland has 500. Both are working on proposals requiring those buildings to undergo seismic retrofits sooner. Currently there are requirements

Ms Dalziel said cities needed to learn from experiences so they were not forgotten. “I’m glad our law was changed – I wish it hadn’t taken these deaths to open our eyes to what we learned 80 years before.” Ms Dalziel is visiting Seattle as part of a sister cities trip and has tied in visits to Portland, Tacoma and San Francisco. She said Canterbury Civil Defence Emergency Management visited Seattle in 2013, where

they focused on unreinforced masonry buildings and retrofitting. Ann Brower also attended. She was the only survivor when an unreinforced Colombo St building collapsed on a bus during the February 22, 2011, earthquake, killing 12. By Bridget Rutherford SIGNS HAVE been painted on St Albans streets to remind residents where to put their rubbish bins on collection day. It comes after people living on Colombo St were leaving their bins on the newly-formed Papanui Parallel cycleway, forcing some cyclists to ride on the road. The city council has painted bin stencils along Colombo and Rutland Sts to educate residents to put their bins on the side of the road, rather than the grass verge or cycleway. It has also dropped off pamphlets showing them the correct location. Before that, residents had not been told where to put them. City council acting head of transport Lynette Ellis

said 260 stencils had been painted along Colombo St, while some had also gone on parts of Rutland St. “They are not intended to be repainted as they should last two to three years before fading out and residents will become familiar with the location of the bins,” she said. “Residents were sent a letter showing the correct locations and the stencils are a reminder.” Ms Ellis said it cost $3000 to paint the stencils. At this stage, they were only on the Papanui Parallel cycleway route at specific locations, she said. REMINDER: White signs have been painted on some St Albans streets to remind residents not to put their bins on the cycleways.

Heritage New Zealand and Hawkins Construction are sharing costs for a time lapse camera that captures progress of the build every 10min from 6.30am to 5.30pm. “We encourage people to view the time lapse camera and watch the rebuild in real time. The tower rebuild should begin to become quite noticeable on Lyttelton’s skyline in the next few weeks,” Heritage New Zealand general manager Nick Chin said. He said it will be a welcome reminder for locals of the familiar

landmark that stood at the site since 1876 but has been missing since the February 22, 2011, earthquake. The Timeball Tower will be finished by the end of April. An internal concrete

shell which will house the automated timeball mechanism is currently being constructed on site. The stone masonry work will take place once it is completed, using as much of the original heritage fabric as possible from the station following its deconstruction. “It is really fantastic to actually see something physical appear at the Timeball site again,” Mr Chin said. As new buildings pop up in Christchurch after the earthquakes, the city’s public art collection has also grown. Bridget Rutherford looks at the new pieces THE VALUE of the city’s public outdoor art has risen to $13.7 million with 19 new pieces added to the collection in the last eight years. The city council has had its outdoor artwork in public places revalued by Art + Object. It was the first valuation since June 2009. Usually it would have been done every three years, but the September 4, 2010, and February 22, 2011, earthquakes meant it could not happen until now. Eight years ago, the total value of the city’s public art was $5.9 million. City council head of parks Brent Smith said, since then, 19 new pieces had been added to the collection. Some were gifts, while others were partially paid for by the city council through its Public Art Advisory Group alongside other organisations. Mr Smith said due to commercial sensitivity, he could not say how much each cost, but released what each was valued at. The figures show the most valuable was the Fanfare sculpture at Chaneys Corner by artist Neil Dawson at just over $3 million. It was funded through the Public Art Advisory Group and SCAPE Public Art. That was followed by Antony Gormley’s STAY, which consists

of two humanoid cast-iron sculptures, one in the Avon River and another at the Arts Centre. They are valued at $956,522. The city council put about $500,000 towards the work, with the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority paying $338,000. The $160,000 in extra costs like transport, legal fees and installation was paid for through sponsorship. Critics said the ratepayer money should have been spent elsewhere. Solidarity Grid, a series of 20 lamp posts by Mischa Kuball along Park Tce, which was bought by SCAPE and the Public Art Advisory Group fund, was valued at $869,565. The most recent public art work to be installed was Pupu Harakeke by artist Virginia King, which sits in the square of Ngai Tahu’s King Edward Barracks development. Valued at $63,362, Pupu Harakeke is a large, stainless steel shell, which has words cut out of it and rotates on a pole. It was jointly paid for by Ngai Tahu, the city council and anchor tenant EY, and installed in March. EY partner Ben Willems picked the sculpture to help remember those lost in the February 22, 2011, earthquake, including his wife Lisa Willems.

Lyttelton’s bronze Sled Dog by Mark Whyte was gifted last year. It was valued between $32,000$42,000. In 2013, Lyttelton’s Albion Square got three pieces: The $10,075 Mandala, the Fifth Ship Flagpoles valued at $11,342, and the most valuable, Waharoa, at $113,043. Bishopdale Library’s Orauwhata was installed last year. Its value was $40,000. Two others were unveiled last year at Aranui Community Centre. Nga Hoe was valued at $76,900, while the cast concrete design was $5000. In 2015, Te Ao Marama, valued at $21,400, was installed in Scarborough Park. Two years prior, the PapanuiInnes Community Board commissioned Sam Mahon to create

a sculpture of the late Graham Condon, which now sits outside the Graham Condon Sport and Recreation Centre. It was valued at $69,565. Tree Houses for Swamp Dwellers was valued at $391,304. It was installed on the corner of Gloucester and Colombo Sts in 2013. In 2012, Koauau O Tane Whakapiripiri Pou and Ohinehou Pou were both gifted and put in place in Governors Bay’s Pony Point Reserve and Lyttelton’s Sutton Reserve. Passing Time, the large twisting ribbon of stainless steel

and copper boxes outside Ara Institute of Canterbury, was put in place in 2011. Its value was $304,348, while Serenade in Fendalton Park was installed in 2010. It was now valued at $55,000. Last week, The Star reported Maddie, who needs potentially lifesaving kidney treatment in the United States, was in Christchurch Hospital with peritonitis – an infection of the lining around her abdomen. But shortly after being discharged from hospital, Maddie was back out horse-riding her way to victory in the North Loburn Equestrian spring dressage tournament at the weekend. She won all of her four dressage events for her level, making her the champion of the competition. “I don’t know how she does it. How she can go from a highdependency unit to winning a horse show. Her stamina is just incredible,” her mother Sarah Manson Collins said. “It has absolutely shattered her but it’s what she wants to be doing. It’s what keeps her well.” Maddie’s instructor Cheryl French, of Carnmore Equestrian, said Maddie has got huge riding talent. “She did very well to last two

would make it less likely a donated kidney would be rejected. But the treatment would cost more than $700,000, and is also conditional on Maddie’s brother, Tomas, donating one of his kidneys to an American patient as part of a “paired exchange” programme. Mrs Manson Collins said she

Residents lose out to quake investors By Gabrielle Stuart CANTABRIANS became “collateral damage” postearthquake as the Government focused on telling positive stories to attract investors, an academic has said. Victoria University of Wellington architecture head of school Morten Gjerde wrote a research paper on Government communication after the earthquakes for an international conference in China last year. He said in the Morten paper that the Gjerde Government was “more eager to tell positive stories about recovery to national and international audiences than they have been to keep residents informed”. “It would be fair to say that local residents have been collateral damage so far during this recovery as leaders have sought to curry favour with local and international investors in order to help drive it,” the paper said. But former Canterbury Earth-

quake Recovery Authority chief executive Roger Sutton strongly disagreed. He said communicating with investors had only been a small part of CERA’s focus. “If I think about my time there, I spent 95 per cent with real Christchurch people and five per cent with that kind of person,” he said. He said CERA “fronted a lot” to Cantabrians, including at some hostile meetings. “We held a meeting with Port Hills residents over the zoning, and I think a lot of Government organisations would never have had the courage to front there,” he said. But he agreed that CERA could have communicated better about rebuild problems. “It’s difficult for the Government to give bad news,” he said. People in leadership roles naturally wanted to tell the positive stories of successes, he said. He said he had personally been told off for doing that by Mayor Lianne Dalziel when he was chief executive of Orion before he moved to CERA. He had been making a

statement about power cuts after the February 22, 2011, earthquake, and had focused on the 92 per cent of Canterbury homes to which the company had returned power, he said. “I remember Lianne rang me up and said, Roger, don’t be such a moron. Don’t talk about the 92 per cent, talk about the eight per cent and when they will get their power on,” he said.

on with Government in terms of what they were being told.” Dr Gjerde’s paper also criticised the slow pace of the rebuild, saying it had been skewed in favour of those who were wealthy. “Those living on the city’s more affluent western suburbs were affected initially by the quakes far less than those living to the east. Since then, money and other resources have flowed much more freely in the west which has seen these areas return quickly to pre-earthquake Roger conditions, Sutton whereas those living in the poorer central and eastern suburbs continue to battle toward recovery with far fewer resources to call upon,” he said. Dr Gjerde said his conclusions were based on Christchurch research findings and comparisons with disaster recovery processes in other countries. He hoped the paper, called Building Back Better, could be used to improve future disaster response processes.

Efforts in beautifying city recognised By Bridget Rutherford THE PERSON tasked with keeping Christchurch beautiful has been recognised with a national award. Linda Keall won the Ruud Kleinpaste Award on Friday at the Beautiful Awards 2017. It recognises a Keep New Zealand Beautiful member whose efforts go above and beyond to enhance the organisation’s mission. “It was a big surprise, it was really lovely,” she said. Ms Keall is Keep Christchurch Beautiful’s manager, and has been in the part-time position for about eight years. She co-ordinates cleanup events and volunteers, helps with graffiti eradication and funding, and runs environment education programmes in schools. The former chemistry teacher said she particularly enjoyed working in schools, acknowledging the work people did, and helping people get involved. When the Ellerslie International Flower Show was running in Christchurch, Keep Christchurch Beautiful entered in the flowerbed display. Ms Keall said she was particularly proud of an entry with Lincoln University students, which won bronze in the show’s last year in 2014. She said everyone could take some responsibility in

Increased flood events and associated drainage are going to be an ongoing issue. Likewise, how the climate is changing things must also be a consideration in any decisions we make about future uses of the residential red zone. Events such as last summer’s Port Hills fires will become more frequent as our part of the world gets drier and this will also have an impact for farming and food production in our region. Getting governments from around the world to agree on the need for global action on climate change was remarkable. Now the challenge is getting actions in place. It is not just governments who will make the difference – it is businesses, cities and of course all of us.



THIS WEEK while coalition talks have been continuing in Wellington, I have been at talks of a different kind. On Monday, along with Deputy Prime Minister and Climate Change Minister Paula Bennett, I set off to the international climate talks in Fiji. This was a pre-meeting of a larger meeting in November when the countries of the world will come together to try and accelerate action around the Paris Climate Agreement. For the participants from over 70 countries, meeting on a Pacific Island brought into sharp relief the need for urgent action on climate change. With the Pacific Ocean literally lapping at the edge of the conference venue and memories of the devastating Cyclone Winston still fresh in the minds of our hosts, the issues of sea level rise and cyclones were at the fore in everyone’s thinking. The mood of the meeting was clear – there needs to be action now to put the words of the Paris Agreement into action. But how climate change will alter things is not just an issue

We can learn from each other LAST YEAR was the 35th anniversary of the sister city relationship between Christchurch and Seattle. In 2016, I welcomed a citizen delegation, led by the Seattle/Christchurch Sister City Board chairwoman Rachel Jacobsen. They came in February so they could join with us for the commemoration of the February 22, 2011, earthquake, and the dedication of the National Earthquake Memorial. I made a commitment to honour the relationship by making the reciprocal visit this year. I am taking the opportunity to visit Portland, Tacoma and San Francisco at the same time and, following the visit, will attend the ITS World Congress in Montreal, where Christchurch is being featured as a city through the efforts of HMI and the autonomous vehicle developments in Christchurch. I am also using the opportunity of the sister city visit to Seattle to speak to their office of emergency management (and also to the Portland equivalent) about our experience, with a particular focus on unreinforced masonry buildings.

I am always pleased to speak to such groups, because I believe we can learn a lot from each other; and for those of us who have experienced disaster, we know how much others want to reach out and help in times of need. It is not often that we get a chance to speak before something happens. I hope that my message can help them choose a path that would minimise the impact of an earthquake should they experience anything of the magnitude we have been through. I have spoken before about the need to learn the lessons of our experience and to build them into our regulatory frameworks. It is so vital to learn the lessons of each experience and embed them, because people forget. I always remind people that what occurred in Christchurch on February 22, 2011, was not without precedent as far as unreinforced masonry buildings were concerned. In February 1931, 80 years

before, many of the first people who died that day as a result of the Hawkes Bay earthquake, were those who ran out of the buildings and were crushed in the rubble of unreinforced masonry. We gained a lot as a country from this and subsequent events. We established a national disaster insurance scheme – the Earthquake Commission – our building code was introduced and the Standards Council was set up. But somehow the risks associated with unreinforced masonry, parapets and decorative features were not highlighted for action. And we continued to

live with the risk that they posed. Buildings with unreinforced masonry were responsible for the deaths of 39 people in the February 22, 2011, earthquake. I’m glad our law was changed – I wish it hadn’t taken these deaths to open our eyes to what we learned 80 years before. It gets so frustrating when you can’t find a disabled park close to where you want to go because someone without a card has taken it. The worst I saw was a young guy early 20s at the oldest, took up two car parks. Lisa Needham – They say they’re working on it detecting if vehicles have mobility tickets but that wouldn’t work. How many times do people with disabilities use other vehicles or are traveling with other people. They aren’t always going to be in their own vehicles.

Teaching, writing and kicking goals John Rosanowski has released his controversial book about the 1866 Maungatapu murders. Bridget Rutherford spoke to him about teaching at Aranui High, rugby league and why he believes two innocent men were hanged for murder Why did you decide to write Treachery Road? Well, I was reading some old papers on Papers Past about 10 years ago and I came across part of the trial for the Burgess gang murders in the Wakamarina Valley near Canvastown, Marlborough, in 1866. As I was reading the evidence, I thought ‘there’s something funny going on here’. I began reading the whole trial, and the clash between the police informer Thomas Sullivan and the gang leader Richard Burgess. Sullivan said the murders were done by Burgess, Thomas Kelly and Philip Levy. Sullivan said he was merely the lookout. Burgess said the murders were the work of

Sullivan on his own. The jury accepted Sullivan’s version and the other three were hanged. I set out to answer the question: Were innocent men executed? I’ve discovered Sullivan was a magnificent liar; it seems clear two innocent men (Kelly and Levy) were hanged. They went to their death calling Sullivan to come clean, even as they stepped

onto the gallows. Do you see your new book as being controversial? It certainly is because there have been about a dozen pieces of writing on it. Wayne Martin, a Christchurch writer, published a book on the murders. Mine is controversial because it contradicts his version. I’ve found various pieces of evidence

he wasn’t privy to. No-one else has located the evidence I’ve got from Tasmanian convict conduct register archives. The state government in Australia has put all its convict information online. I’ve been able to trawl through mountains of evidence from those sources. Australia has also started putting its papers online. From that, it’s clear the

evidence Sullivan gave about himself in court was false. He didn’t come out on the Canton in 1840, he was never a convict overseer, and he wasn’t married in a big cathedral in Melbourne, as he claimed, by the bishop. Why did you get into researching and writing books and novels? It’s part of my background. I went to school in Reefton, then went to study at Canterbury University where I did my thesis on the midland railway – that’s the TranzAlpine now – and the political shenanigans prior to it being built. That was supervised by Philip Ross May, the author of the classic history on the West Coast gold rushes. That started me off. I went teaching and taught at Aranui High School. During that time, I cowrote seven history texts with my colleagues. I went on to the head office in Wellington and was involved in running school certificate. I was chief examiner at Aranui High prior to that. Why did you go teaching? My father and grandfather were coal and gold miners. •Turn to page 26

and landed at Jackson Bay in Westland. I tell people the Rosanowskis were brought in to bring a bit of Polish. What do you like to do in your spare time? I’m a member of the Riccarton Racecourse Bowling Club. And I have sons, daughters and grandchildren. I am actually working on another book, it’s another goldfield murder mystery called Murder on Broadway, which is Reefton’s main street. It is fiction and is set in Reefton in 1877. It involves a young naive police constable left in charge of the town over Christmas and New Year. It is filled with crooked publicans and cops, cheerful exconvicts, hard-nosed prostitutes, white collar criminals and a team of acrobats. It’s not very far away from publication. What do your kids do now? My son Jonathan is a computer programmer for Trimble Navigation, Anna is a nurse at Christchurch Hospital and Sarah is currently at Oxford University writing her master’s thesis in patent law and computer software. I’ve got six grandchildren. One, Emily, is in the New Zealand roller derby team. She’s going to Manchester next year with the team.

rugby league was very strong. Have you done other coaching? The university club was in need of a coach so I gave them a hand for three or four years. I was busy with research. I did coach the New Zealand universities team on three internal tours. There are a lot of talented players in the universities. You played for Linwood didn’t you? I started out playing for Shirley initially. I went to Linwood because Lory Blanchard was coaching. He was the New Zealand coach. I probably played for them for nearly 10 years. We won a couple of premierships in that time.

Papua New Guinea on their Australian tour. I was in Papua New Guinea for a year or two and, from there, went to Mt Isa in Australia. I took up the position of captain/coach for the Christian Brothers Club and our team won the Foley Shield, which is a bit like the Ranfurly Shield for North Queensland. They got me a job in the school. We stayed a year at Mt Isa and were due to come back because we were having our third child. I went back teaching at Aranui. Living in Mt Isa was very interesting. Being a single purpose town, there were a lot of young men who did a great deal of drinking, gambling and fighting. Because there were so many young men there, the

I hear you were a prolific goal kicker? I will say – although I certainly kicked a few goals in my time – when you’re playing for a top team, they score very close to the post and more often it means you end up getting a lot easier kicks. Do you still go along and watch? I usually get over and watch Linwood. I went to the final at Linfield Park – it was a very good match. I think the right team won (Linwood 34-20), but Hornby put on a very good showing. What other books have you written? I’ve got two main ones. The Bottled Lightning: The Story of the Reefton Electric Light and A History of the West Coast of the Southern Alps. I’ve written various others, such as the cover story for the Listener for the New Zealand electricity centennial. I guess your interest in the West Coast comes from growing up there? Yes, I’ve never really left it if you know what I mean. People from the West Coast, they never lose their loyalty. My people were early New Zealand pioneers who came from Poland in 1875

I was at Aranui High for nearly 20 years and had a spell as acting inspector of schools, which was a good experience. I was also part of the advisory service for history teaching with teachers in other schools. Why did you stay there for so long? I was working with some very talented people; it was a very good school and it was a lot of fun. There were very able people at Aranui High. Keri Hulme, the author of The Bone People, was a librarian during her time at Aranui, and several people went into newspapers. Others went into the diplomatic service. Was it sad seeing Aranui High close to make way for Haeata Community Campus? I was sad it closed. But on the other hand, I’m not pessimistic of the chances of the new arrangement. Experts ride in for cycle congress TRANSPORT experts from around the world are gathering in Christchurch this week to share ideas about the benefits cycle networks bring to communities. It’s the first time the Asia Pacific Cycle Congress has been held outside Queensland, and Christchurch is the perfect location for delegates to consider how to harness new technology and innovation to deliver cycleways as a core part of transport infrastructure. For Steve Hoyt-McBeth, a programme manager at the Portland Bureau of Transportation and one of the congress’ keynote speakers, building good infrastructure is critical to getting people on their bikes. While that sounds simple, it is anything but easy. “We’ve developed our transportation systems focused on the automobile and changing that takes money and political will. At a high level, it’s pretty simple: The places with the best bicycle infrastructure have the highest cycling rates. Where it’s more comfortable to drive than bike, the bike rates are low.” Mr Hoyt-McBeth has helped revolutionise cycle commuting in

Portland, United States, over the past 20 years. He will be sharing his experiences at the Asia Pacific Cycle congress today. “Building protected bike lanes is a lot more expensive and requires a lot more trade-offs. So I would say that creating a network of bikeways is important to grabbing that first wave of cyclists and the protected bike lane network is paramount if you want to see a true transformation.” “In Portland, we have a strong community culture around bikes. On Fridays volunteers serve donuts and coffee to people biking into downtown. We

have an amazing 21-day bike festival, Pedalpalooza, at the end of spring with more than 100 different themed bike rides. It’s completely volunteer-run and underscores the strength of the grassroots,’’ Mr Hoyt-McBeth said. “I can’t wait to . . . experience your cycleways and learn from the locals. Getting to speak at the Asia Pacific Cycling Congress is a tremendous opportunity for me. Delicious berries If you want to grow berries, but aren’t sure which ones or how, Hannah Zwartz has a place to start THERE ARE many things to love about growing berries. They’re compact plants, squeezing against fences, into large tubs or otherwise unused corners. Many tolerate part-shade, which is useful on an urban section, and makes them great companion plants forming the understorey or canopy of a ‘food forest’. Unlike fruit trees, they crop within the first year of planting, and of course, they taste all the more delicious when freshly picked. ‘FEET IN THE SHADE, HEADS IN THE SUN’ Many berries are found naturally in deciduous woodlands, lifting themselves into sunlight to flower and fruit, but spreading their roots in deep, damp leaf litter. They need sun to fruit well, but they dislike dry, baking heat, preferring a coolish root run that never totally dries out. Too much humidity or waterlogging are not good either.

Ideal conditions for most berries would be free-draining soil with plenty of compost and leaf mould, deeply mulched with rotting woodchip. WHERE CAN BERRIES GROW? The ultimate garden accessory must be a walk-in netting-covered cage (birds love ripe berries almost as much as children do). Failing that, those with smaller gardens can use a fence or wall to support berry canes, with netting attached to drop down and cover ripening fruit. There’s a berry to suit most niches – even the smallest garden has room for a tub or barrel with strawberries, raspberries or boysenberry canes. STRAWBERRIES A bowl of fresh-picked strawberries for summer breakfasts is an achievable luxury; as well as being delicious these berries are rich in vitamins and iron. Ancestral strawberries were woodland plants, fruiting early, before the leaf canopy closed over

for summer. Modern strawberries are bred for later fruiting, and need lots of sun to fruit well, but still hate to dry out. For a longer season, plant more than one variety. Prepare a bed with plenty of compost; planting along a ridge above a ditch makes for easy watering. A nice deep mulch of pine needles is said to improve the flavour while also deterring snails. Strawberries also do well in large pots, which can be moved into the garden’s sunniest spots as berries are ripening. Plants might be short-lived, producing their best crops for just a few years, but you can keep propagating runners for an ongoing supply of new plants. Peg the first runner into a pot, to be cut off and replanted once roots have grown. (Those further down the line will never crop as well.) Replanting these runners every winter or spring, while digging out the oldest plants, keeps the bed producing well. Experts recommend six to seven plants per person. •Turn to page 34

RASPBERRIES Raspberries spread by suckering and once planted are difficult to dig out. A good position could be against an eastfacing wall that gets morning sun, planted at the feet of deciduous trees such as apples, or as part of a hedgerow with other shrubs and berries. They can happily coexist with annual companions such as borage and calendula. Remove perennial weeds like buttercup or couch before planting, as you won’t be able to do so once the raspberries’ roots have developed. Thick mulching protects the root zone and helps keep weeds away. About two canes per person is recommended; plant them about 80cm apart. You can plant closer but they will

very quickly fill in the gaps, because raspberries sucker prolifically, hence the tradition of growing them in narrow hedges or along wire frames (this also helps with bird netting). Unwanted suckers that push their way into paths can be removed or mown over. BLACKBERRIES AND THEIR HYBRIDS While taking up less space than a fruit tree, these need at least 2m to spread out. Canes can grow on a sunny fence or wall; against a house, shed or garage; along wires strung between posts or waratahs; against a trellis; even up a pillar or into a fruit tree if space is lacking. Blackberriesm (left) could also grow in a large container such as a half-barrel, if well fed and watered. I would always choose thornless types. Try ‘Navaho’ or ‘Black Satin’. Loganberries are a cross between blackberries and raspberries. ‘Waimate’ is a thornless one. Boysenberries are hybrids with large, tasty fruits. ‘Thornless Jewel’ is a good variety. All these have perennial root systems, bearing biennial stems. In the first year, canes grow long and in the second year they bear flowers and fruit on small sidebranches (laterals).

type to suit most niches GOOSEBERRIES These seem to do best for South Island gardeners. If you live in a warmer climate, try them against an east-facing wall to avoid the drying afternoon sun. If space is short they can be trained against walls, espaliered, or even grown in containers as long as they don’t dry out. Each plant needs about 1-1.5m. As with their close relations the currants, plenty of compost or manure keeps plants strong. A regular dressing of wood ash or potash ensures good fruiting, and a deep layer of mulch keeps roots cool and moist and helps avoid weeds (gooseberry plants are prickly, so the less weeding needed the better). BLUEBERRIES Blueberries are quite particular about their growing conditions, but get those right and they can do well across the country. Part of the trick is choosing the right variety, and this depends on which part of the country you are in. Some are deciduous and need winter chilling – just to be confusing, these are called ‘northern’ types (from the northern, cooler states of America) while rabbiteye and

cultivated by cross-pollinating the flowers of three other berries: raspberry, loganberry and blackberry. Propagate boysenberries by cuttings, or by layering. The fruit don’t have a long shelf life, but it’s not difficult to ensure they are consumed quickly. Boysenberries enjoy having some support, so give them a trellis fence to grow along. CRANBERRY The cranberry is native to North America and can be found Tayberry

‘southern’ types, bred for warmer climates, suit northern parts of New Zealand better (from Waikato northwards). Most varieties also do best with a different sort nearby to crosspollinate them. In their native habitat blueberries grow on riverbanks and on islands in peat bogs, with plenty of sun, and constant access to water without being actually waterlogged. If you don’t happen to have a peat bog with an island in your backyard, try to keep the soil moist but not soggy. If you are gardening on sand or clay, the best bet may be to grow blueberry plants in a large tub or barrel

filled with compost-rich, acid soil and well mulched with woodchip to keep the shallow roots from drying out. Blueberries don’t need a lot of feeding; compost and mulch will generally supply their needs. The only pruning needed is in winter to cut out some of the oldest, twiggy growth to encourage new branches to sprout. BOYSENBERRY Walter Knott named the boysenberry after Rudolph Boysen. Exactly how Rudolf Boysen came across the boysenberry remains a mystery, but it is said to have been

in sandy bogs in the United States and Canada. These bogs were created by glacial deposits. German and Dutch settlers began calling it ‘crane berry’, because the flower looks like a crane’s head and bill. Cranberries are very tart raw, so they’re mostly used in drinks and sauces, or sweetened and dried. The cranberry looks very similar to the Chilean guava (or NZ cranberry), but they are not the same. Cranberries like sandy acidic soil with added peat. LOGANBERRY James Harvey Logan discovered this berry in California, back in 1880. It’s a cross between the

blackberry and the raspberry. The loganberry has been used to produce hybrids such as the tayberry, boysenberry and ‘Kotata’ blackberry. TAYBERRY The tayberry is yet another hybrid berry, but one for which we have the Scots to thank. A cross of the ‘Aurora’ blackberry and raspberry, it was named after the Tay River in Scotland (where it was bred). It is a good berry for jam making. Give tayberries a good mix of compost and manure when planting. Continue to mulch them with manure and compost every year afterwards and they’ll thank you with luscious-tasting berries. WHAT IS A BERRY? Botanically speaking, a berry is “a fleshy fruit without a stone produced from a single flower containing one ovary”. This means grapes, tomatoes, avocados, watermelon and bananas are ‘berries’, but blackberries and raspberries are not – botanically, they are ‘aggregate fruits’. Commonly, however, a berry is any small, edible fruit – usually small, round, juicy and brightly coloured. •More gardening, p36

Easy care and colour with coreopsis By Henri Ham COREOPSIS ARE a fantastic plant to grow at this time of year. Planted now, they will thrive in the summer sun – which, fingers crossed, should arrive at some point. Their love of the sun makes them super easy-care. Once planted, unless there’s a drought, they don’t need much watering at all. Three varieties which produce, bright, yellow, sunny flowers are early sunrise, rising sun and sunburst. Early sunrise has green leaves with golden-yellow, semidouble flowers. Rising sun produces double golden-yellow flowers with red eyes. Sunburst also produces golden-yellow, semi-double and double flowers. All three make great borders and lovely cut flowers. Once you’ve got your plants, be sure to grow them in the sunniest spot in your garden around 40-50cm apart. Give them a light watering and then let them do their thing. When they start flowering

BARBECUE BANANA WITH CHOCOLATE Ingredients 4 large Bananas 100g Chocolate buttons 1 Ltr Vanilla ice cream, to serve ½ cup Caramel sauce 1 packet Sliced almonds, to garnish Directions Remove the bananas from their skin. Cut along one side

plastic bag, seal and roll a wooden rolling pin firmly over the package to crush the biscuits finely. Alternatively crush them in a food processor. Cut a thick slice off the top of the apple and set aside. These will be the chapeaux — hats. Using an apple corer or a teaspoon, dig out the flesh from the centre of the apple, leaving a thin edge of apple around the inside and base.

Discarding any core pieces, chop the flesh finely. Mix together the biscuit crumbs, butter and chopped apple to make a soft mix. Divide the mix evenly among the apples, packing it in firmly. Sit the hats back on top. Place the apples on a baking paper-lined tray or in a shallowsided ovenproof dish. Bake for 15-20min or until the apples have softened. Serve with cream or hot custard.

Unimog tour into the West Coast wilderness By Mike Yardley OCCUPYING THE northern end of the West Coast, tap into the heart of Buller with local tour operator, Out West Tours. They run a variety of off road tours in superbly reconditioned Unimogs, to the likes of the Denniston Plateau, Warren Stratford’s astonishing John Deere Museum and deep into the heartland. Owned and operated by Mickey and Doreen Ryan, their newest offering is a six-hour tour, called Johnny’s Journey, mixing an assortment of coastal gems with the wilderness. Mickey Ryan is the quintessential nuggety Coaster, who regaled me with an unfurling spool of vivid stories and unvarnished insights, in disarmingly honest fashion. We admired lancewood trees growing on the roadside, which as Mickey explained, evolved so that their leaves were protected against the roaming moa. We popped into Charleston, which during the 1860s gold rush, groaned with 80 hotels, quenching the thirst of the hordes of gold-diggers labouring along the Nile River. New Zealand’s first toll bridge was erected across the river by Constant Bay, just one gem in a necklace of stunning little bays off the tourist trail. A paddlesteamer formerly plied the river and Constant Bay was once used as a harbour, with ships squeezing through a narrow gap between the bay’s rocky headlands. I marvelled over the quaint old harbour master’s house at Joyce Bay, and collected smooth quartz stones, like readymade jewellery, from the shoreline of Ladies Bay. Then we headed inland into Madmans Valley, where Mickey led me to the most dramatic limestone cliff gushing with a water spout, which has been nicknamed Cowpiddle Bluff. Mickey recently built a magnificent flight of wooden steps to reach this striking formation. Heading even deeper into the heartland, we forded some

streams and headed over a saddle into the gob-smacking bucolic splendour of Awakari Valley, a sprawling rainforest valley neighbouring Paparoa National Park. The panoramic ridgeline lookout is mouth-watering. It’s the world’s biggest privately owned rimu forest, under the purview of a true living West Coast legend, Johnny Currie. He’s 76, as fit as a buck rat with the mind of a steel trap, and a bit like a cross between the Wizard of Christchurch and Barry Crump. He’s done it all. Farming, logging, deerstalking, mining, caving and tour guiding. He’s the bushman’s bushman. And the 1800ha of this valley is his realm. An imNATURE: A towering chain of Pancake Rock formations. Johnny has cleaned a lot of them, so they shimmer like vast ivorycoloured stacks of limestone.

Johnny’s family connection with the Awakari Valley, reaches back more than a century, and he lives in a 50-year-old bush hut, not dissimilar to what his forebears sheltered in. Before descending into the base of the valley, Mickey pin-pointed some of the scores of wild red deer, free-roaming across the terrain. Thirty years ago, Johnny prohibited deer hunting from the valley, dedicating his kingdom of regenerating native forest and tinkling gin-clear streams as a wild deer reserve.

Johnny lives completely off the grid. No power. No running water, although though the pristine Awakari River runs right outside his tin hut. I chatted to Johnny alongside his cracking wood fireplace, about his poacher-turned-game-keeper conversion from clear-felling logger to forest protector, the surprises kept coming. We strolled through radiant green valley glades, to admire an ancient Maori cave bordering the river. Did you know that there are Pancake Rocks beyond the feted formations at Punakaiki? I certainly didn’t. Johnny’s got a towering chain of Pancake Rock formations, rising up from the

valley bed. He’s cleaned a lot of them, so they shimmer like vast ivory-coloured stacks of limestone. Former roller skater proves track cycling master By Gordon Findlater GRAEME LITT has won a gold and silver medal at the Masters Track Cycling World Championships in Los Angeles, 32 years after representing New Zealand in roller skating. Litt won the gold medal in the men’s 65-69 years sprint event. In the final he dropped the first race to Frenchman Jean Louis Duble, before recovering to storm home in races two and three to claim

He was the top qualifier for the sprint in 12.352sec and accounted for current world record holder Mark Rodamaker (United States) 2-0 in the quarter-final before beating Christian Meselet from France in two straight rides in the semi-final. The silver medal was added to the collection when Litt finished second in the 500m time trial with a time of 37.805sec.

He returned to Christchurch from the United States yesterday and said it was a dream come true to win the gold medal. Litt represented New Zealand at the World Roller Speed Skating Championships in Colorado in 1985. He did not medal there but held a number of New Zealand speed skating records for nearly 10 years. In 2005 Litt purchased a road bike and raced on the road as

a hobby doing races such as Le Race, Graperide and Round the Lake in Taupo. However, it was only two years ago that he began track cycling. Litt competed at nationals in March 2016 and won the 500m time trail with new record in the Masters 7 (65-69 years) with a time of 38.394sec. This year he defended the 500m title and broke his own record. He also finished second in the 2km pursuit.

The pros and cons of building sites When selecting a building site weigh up your lifestyle, family needs and aspirations before signing up for any section. Those purchasing early on in the development of a subdivision will have more choice of section size and orientation to the street and sun. As the individual sites are sold, there may be less availability though this need not be a deterrent. With good design any building site can be made to work. Canterbury has experienced considerable growth in recent years. Sub-divisions have opened up and been built on, with new developments regularly coming on stream. Within these, section sizes vary from around 400 square metres upwards to 5,000 square metres. Lifestyle blocks are also scattered around the province. The size of the house and amount of yard desired will influence the feasibility of some building sites as will sun and wind direction, bearing in mind that a house can be designed to capture the sun’s free heat and allow for pleasant outdoor areas to enjoy. If the street side of the building site is north/north west, incorporating fenced or planted courtyards can offer private places to entertain and bask in the sun. Those wanting street presence or keen on gardening may prefer a corner section and while it might seem they offer less privacy, with strategic placement of fences quite the opposite can be the case. Weigh up your family’s needs in terms of the outdoor areas too. Do you want play areas for your children? Do you have a need for off-street parking for a number of vehicles and space for a boat, caravan or motorhome, which
